WOMEN'S EQUALITY
Did suffrage accomplish full equality for women?

Introduction for Students

Most of you will be eligible to vote in a few years. As a future voter it is your responsibility to be informed about the issues that affect your life. You will be playing the role of an informed citizen who has an opinion about the current status of women's equality.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • "In 2004, women were paid 76 cents for every dollar men received. That's $24 less to spend on groceries, housing, child care and other expenses for every $100 worth of work we do. (It's Time for Working Women to Earn Equal Pay, 2005.)"

  • "In the Army women cannot serve in the following: infantry, armor, cannon field artillery and short range air defense artillery. (Women in Combat, 2005.)"

  • "The Department of Education on March 17, 2005 issued a new Title IX policy that threatens to reverse the progress that women and girls have made in sports. (Save Title IX, The Current Fight, 2005.)"

The Constitution says "All men are created equal". Does that include women too?

The 19th Amendment was passed in 1920 giving women the right to vote. This was a huge step towards equality for women. However some say there is more to accomplish in the 21st century. Title IX, women in military combat, and equal pay are just some examples of issues in which people are still concerned.

You will be using the Library of Congress Web site, along with other resources, to research the history behind the Women's Rights movement from the suffrage-era to present-day.
