What was the Harlem Renaissance?

Perhaps the best way to begin answering this question is to ask another: what is a renaissance?

Renaissance: A rebirth of art, music, literature, or culture.

During the Harlem Renaissance African American artists were able to express their voices. This first movement would pave the way for all future African American artists. The careers of musicians like Ray Charles and Alicia Keyes, and actors such as Denzel Washington and Halle Berry were possible because of the path left by the people of the Harlem Renaissance.
