On this segment of your Legacy Quest, you will examine the lifestyle of a Native American tribe and how it contributed to the survival of early colonists in North America.

Task 1: Examine three images by completing the Venn diagram

1. Click on the image below to look at the drawing of the Secotan tribe in North Carolina.  What does it tell us about how these Native Americans met their basic needs of food, water, and shelter? List these things on the left side of the Venn diagram.

2. Click on the images below to look at two images of the Jamestown, VA settlement.  What do they tell us about how settlers might have met their basic needs of food, water and shelter?  List these things on the right side of the Venn diagram.

3. Compare the photo of the Secotan tribe and the drawing of the Jamestown, VA settlement.  In the center of the Venn diagram list the things the settlers may have learned from their Native American neighbors.

Task 2: Read from a primary source.

  1. Read about some of the foods, the water supply,and the shelters used by the Native Americans.

  2. Take notes on at least three notecards (but no more than nine). Use the notecard format practiced in class.  What ideas about food, water and shelter might the Native Americans have shared with the Jamestown colonists?
